Can You Eat With Invisalign® Aligners?

Can You Eat With Invisalign Aligners?
You can eat anything with Invisalign® aligners as long as you remove them first. That’s a big advantage of Invisalign treatment compared to traditional braces. This means you can eat anything that you often can’t eat with braces, including:

  • Popcorn
  • Gummy foods
  • Caramel
  • Apples
  • Corn on the cob
  • Gum
  • Nuts
  • Hard candies

Are There Things You Can’t Eat With Invisalign Aligners?

Nope! As long as you take them out before enjoying, you can eat whatever you’d like. However, there are a few things to consider.

Certain foods can stain your aligners if you don’t properly brush your teeth after eating them. Wearing them for the recommended amount of time (at least 20-22 hours per day) creates a higher risk of staining your teeth if they’re not taken care of.

Chewing gum can also be harder with Invisalign aligners. It’s okay to chew gum while they are out, however, that means you’ll be spending 10-20 minutes without them in every time you decide to chew gum. This creates more opportunities to forget to put them back in your mouth, which can put your treatment time off track.

Why Can’t I Eat With My Aligners In?

It may be tempting to sneak a few snacks with your aligners in, but we recommend taking the time to remove it every time you want to eat. Eating with them in can bend or break the plastic, which can lengthen your estimated treatment time while you’re waiting for replacement aligners or using aligners that don’t fit properly.

What Can I Drink With My Aligners In?

You can safely drink water with your aligners in! In fact, we encourage you to drink as much water as you’d like. Water washes away any food particles that could be stuck between your teeth or your aligners. It can also keep your breath fresh and help your mouth adjust to them.

Some of our patients report an overly dry or wet mouth when they first start treatment. Water can help balance that.

Drinking anything else, especially coffee or tea can stain the plastic. Plus, if you’re drinking something hot, it could warp or bend the plastic. You can still drink hot things as long as you remember to take your aligners out first.

Caring for Your Aligners After Eating

Whenever you eat, there are a few things you should do:

  1. Always put your aligners in their case instead of on a napkin or plate.
  2. Brush your teeth before putting your aligners back in.
  3. Clean your aligners every night to prevent stains.

If you’re heading to school, here are some tips and tricks you can use to take care of your aligners on the go.

Don’t Have a Toothbrush With You?

If you don’t have a toothbrush with you, rinse your mouth with water. When you get home, take the time to brush your teeth and aligners, even if it’s been a while since you’ve eaten. This can remove any food stuck between your teeth and keep your aligners (and breath) smelling fresh.

Cleaning Your Aligners at Night

Keeping your aligners clean is crucial to keeping your teeth white and stain-free after your treatment is complete. There are a few options you can try to keep them fresh:

  • Use a branded treatment solution.
  • Brush them with a soft toothbrush and dish soap.
  • Dissolve a denture tablet in water and let them soak for 15 minutes.
  • Follow the directions on the retainer cleaner and soak them in water for 15 minutes.
  • Soak them in a solution of hydrogen peroxide and water.
  • Soak them in vinegar and water.
