How to: Own this Holiday Season with Braces
November 18, 2016
If you think you’re just going to fly through the holidays without having to think about your braces, think again. Lots of food, desserts, and candy can be a threat to your orthodontic treatment and get in the way of that awesome braces shine. Here’s a simple guide to get you through.
Smaller Food Is Better
As a rule of thumb, cut vegetables and meat into smaller pieces… every time. Larger pieces will cause more stress on wires and brackets, and you’ll have an easier time chewing. But, by by all means, go for as much meat and potatoes as you can possibly eat- we encourage it :).
Drink Lots of Water
Keep your mouth hydrated and braces free and clear of food particles. You wouldn’t want to be caught with a carrot chunk in your teeth, right?
Brush After Every Meal
Keep those pearly whites, well, pearly. Don’t miss a chance to brush your teeth and keep your teeth extra clean!
Choose Fruits Over Hard Candy
This one should be pretty obvious, because we tell you this all the time. Hard sweets can dislodge your braces, and gummy sweets or gum… well, that just gets messy. Enjoy some fresh fruit to satisfy your sweet tooth: berries are rich in vitamin C and naturally whiten your teeth.
A Few More Tips
- Enlist a family member or friend to check your teeth for food after every meal.
- Don’t forget your travel-sized toothbrush if you’re visiting family for the holidays. Forgetting it could cause you some stress.
- Don’t eat and talk. After every meal, head to the bathroom to brush and check your braces.
That’s it! Have a fun holiday season and keep those pearly whites, white, and those braces shining.
