Invisalign FAQ: What You Should Know About Invisalign
April 12, 2018
Are you thinking about getting orthodontic treatment but don’t want the dreaded “brace-face”? Did you know there’s another option that can give you the same great results as traditional braces without the appearance of braces? Invisalign can do that and more, but what is it? How does it work? Here are some commonly asked questions about Invisalign to help you decide if Invisalign could be the right treatment option for you!
What Is Invisalign?
Invisalign is an orthodontic treatment option used to straighten your teeth and bite. Unlike traditional braces that work with brackets and wires to straighten teeth, Invisalign is a nearly-invisible treatment option that straightens teeth with clear plastic retainers.
How Does Invisalign Work?
Invisalign works with nearly invisible retainers that are custom-made for your teeth. These retainers apply pressure, much like traditional braces’ wires and brackets do, to shift and adjust your teeth to the right position. When you come in to Smile Ranch to start treatment, here’s what you can expect.
First, we take an iTero® scan of your teeth to create a 3D image of your mouth as a base for your custom-made retainer. This image can be adjusted to show each step of the process and even what your teeth will look like after Invisalign treatment.
Once we’ve taken the scans of your teeth, we will then create custom retainers that you’ll need to change every few weeks to keep your treatment going. After that, it’s up to you. Invisalign retainers need to be worn for 22 hours a day, and you can expect to have to come in every few months to make sure your teeth are straightening properly.
After you’ve finished treatment, we will provide you with a permanent or removable retainer to keep your new Smile Ranch smile looking just as good as when you finished treatment! What Can Invisalign Fix?
Invisalign can be just as effective as traditional braces, which means that anything that can be fixed by braces can be fixed by Invisalign too. Invisalign can be used to fix:
- Widely spaced teeth
- And more!
While Invisalign can fix these things, it’s important to meet with an orthodontist to pick the best treatment option for you. If you want to know if Invisalign would work for you, schedule a free consultation with us!
Is Invisalign Better Than Braces?
Both Invisalign and braces have their advantages and disadvantages, and there’s no real answer to which treatment option is better. Invisalign can straighten your teeth just like braces can, but these two options are different. Check out this chart to see all the differences among the treatment options we offer!
How Much Does Invisalign Cost?
The cost of Invisalign depends on the orthodontist, what needs to be treated, and how long that treatment takes. Smile Ranch calculates the cost of treatments differently, and you can find out more about the Smile Ranch Difference here.
How Will Invisalign Affect My Lifestyle?
Unlike traditional braces, Invisalign is removable, which means you can eat what you want (as long as you remove your retainers) and it’s easier to clean your teeth. However, there are also a few changes you need to make to adjust to the Invisalign retainers. If you’re planning on getting Invisalign, you’ll need to:
- Wear the retainers at least 22 hours a day.
- Brush and floss after every meal.
- Don’t drink anything but water if your retainers are in.
The success of your Invisalign treatment is up to you! Wearing your retainers as directed can keep your treatment schedule on track and properly brushing and flossing can keep your teeth free of stains and cavities.
Who Is Eligible for Invisalign?
As a registered Invisalign Teen Provider, we believe Invisalign can work for everyone, not just teens and not just adults. However, that doesn’t mean Invisalign is right for everyone. If you want to find out if Invisalign may be the right treatment for you, take our quiz!
How Noticeable Is Invisalign?
When taken care of right, Invisalign retainers are nearly invisible. That’s because the retainers are made of a clear plastic, and there’s no metal appliance to keep it in place. Some people may have a small “button” attached to their teeth to keep the retainer in place, but it is usually tooth-colored and unnoticeable. Note: How you care for your retainers also affects how invisible the retainers are. Foods and drinks that are known for staining your teeth, such as coffee, can stain your retainers, making the Invisalign retainers less invisible if not taken care of properly.
Will Invisalign Retainers Cause Any Speech Impediments?
Some people may notice a slight lisp when they first start wearing their Invisalign retainers. However, it should go away as you get used to wearing them. If you notice that the lisp isn’t going away, it may be a sign that the retainer isn’t fitting quite right. If that’s the case, don’t hesitate to contact us for an appointment so we can adjust your retainer.
