Starting the School Year With Invisalign®? Here Are 3 Helpful Care Hacks!
September 20, 2018
Did you get Invisalign® aligners over the summer? If so you’re probably still getting used to taking care of them—especially while you’re at school. Don’t worry! Relax and know that it’s about to get easier as you apply these helpful hacks.
1. Use 5 Minutes of Your Lunch Period to Brush, Floss, and Rinse
You should take the last five minutes of your lunch period to go to the restroom and take care of your oral hygiene needs. Because your Invisalign® aligner fits to your teeth perfectly brushing and flossing is extremely important. By doing so you prevent pieces of food and bacteria from being trapped between your teeth and your aligner which can cause cavities and other dental dilemmas in the future.
Although you should soak your aligner in a solution every day, you don’t need to worry about that while you’re at school. You simply need to brush it with a toothbrush. Make sure to not use the same one you brush your teeth with as you don’t want to get toothpaste on it. Just use cold water and brush very lightly—there is no need to scrub harshly.
2. Keep an Oral Care Kit in Your Backpack
To take care of your oral hygiene needs you’ll need to have the following supplies on hand:
- A toothbrush with soft bristles to clean the aligner
- A normal, dentist-approved travel toothbrush for brushing your teeth
- Dental floss or picks
- An aligner case
Keep these items in a small pencil pouch. Doing so will keep your toothbrushes clean and prevent everything from getting lost in your backpack or locker. If you don’t want your peers knowing that you’re off to the restroom to brush your teeth, the pouch is also a good way to disguise these necessities.
3. Keep a Water Bottle on Hand
While wearing Invisalign® aligners you shouldn’t drink anything but cold water. That means no sodas from the vending machines. Of course, you may drink these when your aligners are out during lunch. However, you’d have to take them out every single time you wanted to take a quick swig of cola or whichever soda beverage is your preferred choice. That means you’d have to keep repeating hack #1. Because your teachers might not be too willing to give you a hall pass every time you needed to do that it’d be easier to just stick to drinking water throughout the day.
The solution is simple: keep a water bottle with you. Note that the water you drink shouldn’t be flavored or colored. If you’d like to drink sparkling water, make sure that it is completely clear and doesn’t have any sugar in the ingredients. Otherwise, your aligner could possibly end up becoming stained. The water should also be cold because warm water could cause the aligner to lose its shape.
