What Can I Eat with Braces?
July 5, 2022
There are so many foods out there that are “braces-friendly” and your orthodontist doesn’t want to necessarily prevent you from eating all of your favorite foods. If you are in the process of getting braces, you are probably wondering right away what you can and cannot eat. There may be a few foods you are going to have to sacrifice for a little while during this big change in your life, but we can assure you that having a brand new confident smile is worth it!
Foods You Can Eat With Braces
If you are new to braces, then you probably aren’t too sure what to expect and how your life might be when adjusting to the change. When wondering what you can and cannot eat, think of foods that are soft and easier to eat. Here are some things you can eat with braces:
- Soft fruits and vegetables
- Apple Sauce
- Soft potatoes
If there are a few foods out there that we have not yet listed, then be sure to call your local dentist for more information on which of your favorite foods you can or cannot eat.
Foods You Shouldn’t Eat With Braces
Whether you have traditional metal braces or ceramic braces, that doesn’t mean you are limited to food, it just means there are a few things you might have to try differently or avoid for the time being. Keep in mind, there are so many great foods out there and even new things for you to try! For now, if some of the foods you eat are sticky or crunchy, that usually means you should stay away as this can cause issues to your dental wires or brackets. Here are few foods you should stay away from:
- Crunchy fruits or vegetables
- Hard or sticky candy
- Beef jerky
- Corn on the cob
Also keep in mind that continuing old habits such as biting your nails or chewing on hard objects can really damage your brackets and it is best to quit now even before you get your new braces.
The professionals at Smile Ranch are here to make your life easier and from experience, we know a few tips and tricks to make eating with braces just as enjoyable as before. Of course it is quite the difference and will take time to adjust, but we are here to guide you through the new process. New braces doesn’t mean you have to stop eating your favorite snacks or meals. You may just need to make a few minor adjustments to the common foods you eat. When cooking or food prepping, we highly recommend making your food softer than usual or chopping up crunchy foods into smaller sizes. Getting into instant pot recipes or soups can be a great way to go and a fun way to try something new. Also, be sure to remove any bones from any meat and cut the crust off of your favorite pizza. If you have a love for nuts, substitute your craving with creamy nut butters instead.
Even if you have a huge sweet tooth, there are a few sweets out there that you don’t have to give up. Of course, coming from a dentist’s perspective, we are going to try to convince you as much as we can to stay away from all those sweets, but we get it! So, here are a few sweet treats you can easily enjoy with braces:
- Candy bars that don’t have nuts or caramel
- Chocolate without nuts
- Soft cookies
- Marshmallow snacks
- Ice Cream
If sweets and treats are important to you, just be sure to be cautious with what you eat and if it is worth broken braces or delaying that perfect smile you had always wanted!
