When to Get Braces
October 30, 2014
Deciding when it’s time for braces is a question many parents ask for their kids. While there is some variation, there are certain marking points that can point in the right direction of when braces will be needed.
Do I Need Braces?
Not everyone will need braces in their life. To determine this, it is important to start taking your child to a dentist early on in life. Here you will be informed not only on proper care of the teeth, but the likelihood that braces will be needed in the future. From here you may be sent to an orthodontic specialist to look deeper into the the treatment needed.
There are many different reasons why a person may need orthodontic treatment. Some of the most common oral problems here include:
- Bad bite (also known as malocclusion). This occurs when the top and bottom jaws are different sizes resulting in an overbite or an underbite.
- Crooked teeth
- Teeth that overlap
- Crowded teeth
Aesthetic reasons aside, these issues may result in larger problems if left alone. Tooth decay is just one of many that can result from overlapping teeth. Getting these taken care of at a young age will prevent oral problems now and more advanced ones later in life.
The Right Time
The right time to get braces will be unique for everyone. While it is never too late to take advantage of this oral correction, getting it taken care of sooner will be better. Your dentist and orthodontist can advise you as to when you should get the orthodontic treatment, and what appliances will be best for your situation.
For most people, the best time to get braces will be sometime between the ages of ten and fourteen. At this point most of the baby teeth will have already been lost, making way for the adult teeth, but the mouth and head are both still growing. This stage of growth allows for the teeth to more easily move to the correct position. With that being said an increased number of adults are now wearing braces to correct their oral problems and achieve a healthier smile.
Beginning orthodontic treatment at the right time is important in the process, but it is also crucial to recognize that it’s never too late for braces. Talk with your orthodontist to determine when the right time for braces will be for you.
